Letter from Charlie Carroll 3/11/2013:
                                    March 11th, 2013
Dear Sixth Grade Parents,
As we get closer to April, and the weather heats up, thoughts turn to our sixth grade outdoor experience at Chewonki. The dates for this year’s trip are April 29 – May 3. Attached are the materials to get started in the Chewonki process.

After all fundraising efforts, the cost of the trip this year is $163.00. Checks should be made out to CEMS and may be dropped off at the main office. The deadline for families to pay the $163 is April 1, 2013. Payment plans and hardship (partial or full scholarship) cases may be arranged through the school guidance department by contacting Kim Sturgeon (ksturgeon@capeelizabethschools.org). Requests for hardship assistance must be made through Kim Sturgeon so that the school can accurately determine program costs.  Families may arrange monthly payments.

The health form should be completed and turned in to your child’s homeroom teacher by March 22 . Please make sure that the tetanus immunization is up to date. Our school nurse will carefully examine these forms and Chewonki staff will be made aware of all health concerns. Along with the medical form is an equipment and clothing list put together by the Chewonki Foundation. All of this information can also be found on the CEMS Chewonki website: https://sites.google.com/a/capeelizabethschools.org/chewonki/   or at the Chewonki website: http://www.chewonki.org/

In preparing the students for their Chewonki experience, an informational meeting will be held for them, during school, on the afternoon of April 3. A representative from the foundation will give a slide show covering the facilities and activities offered at Chewonki. Students will also witness a packing demonstration during the session.

After school, on April 3rd, the Chewonki spokesperson and Mr.Carroll will be available to meet with parents who had specific medical concerns or special information they need to share about their child that goes beyond what the medical form is able to communicate. These confidential meetings will be held in the Madden Conference Room of the Middle School Library starting at 2:45 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis.

That same evening (April 3), at 6:30 p.m. in the Middle School Band Room, the Chewonki representative will present the same slide show and packing demonstration for parents along with a question and answer period. Parents in past years have found this session to be informative and helpful in gaining a better understanding of the Chewonki program. I hope to see you there. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

Outdoor Experience  1/9/12 Meeting Recap (from Steve Connolly's Blog)
On Monday, January 9, the middle school held an outdoor experience informational meeting for grade four and five parents. The primary reason for the meeting was to rally parents around the urgent need for fundraising to continue these programs. There are three outdoor experiences mainly funded by parents and the MSPA that occur during the middle school years: the fifth grade Freedom Trail in Boston, the sixth grade Chewonki week-long encampment, and the seventh and eighth grade Camp Ketcha Healthy Choices day that occurs every two years for students and parents (topic: substance abuse and decision-making).
You will see in the attached information that the overwhelming majority of discussion Monday night was about Chewonki, due to the significant fund-raising needs. (Grade five needs to raise $12,000 by September 2012.) The entire presentation  (one hour) is available to you at the following link.
Thank you to those parents who were able to join us. Also, many thanks to the following presenters: Garth Altenburg and Katie Tremblay from Chewonki; Charlie Carroll and Sarah Kinsella from CEMS, Francesca Governali and Andrew Hollyday from CEHS, and Lisa Stevens and Anne Ingalls from the MSPA.
Here is a link to a letter from Jessica Jordan, a former middle school student who attended Chewonki eighteen years ago.
This link is a letter to parents about how to make a tax deductible personal or business donation directly to Chewonki and earmarked for your child's class.
This link will take you to a document that tells fourth and fifth grade parents how much money needs to be raised and how to get involved in parent leadership to make this trip happen.
Thank you for taking the time to view the presentation and links. I look forward to working with you in the future to ensure the continuation of the outdoor experiences.
